Original Number:  GTW 1767

The locomotive was delivered new to Grand Trunk Western in August of 1954.

It was an EMD GP9 ( 4-axle diesel-electric locomotive built by General Motors).

​It is notable for being one of the railroad's first passenger diesels, equipped with a steam generator for heating.​​​

GTW 1767 was restenciled in 1956 to GTW 4901. The locomotive continued to be used as a passenger locomotive.

It was part of the 1980s and early 1990s rebuild program as some of the Grand Trunk Railroad's locomotives were transferred to Canadian National. The locomotive was restenciled to CN (GTW) 4635.

 

In January of 1993 the locomotive was rebuilt in Battle Creek by CN with a GP94 and reclassified as GR-417a.It emerged in the CN North American livery without map logos and with GTW sub lettering.

The locomotive was officially retired on January 23, 1998 following a multi-stage retirement process. It was stored and served as a Y2K emergency power source in Toronto in late 1999.

 

Minnesota Northern Railroad purchased the locomotive in January of 2008. It was restenciled to MNN 1356.
